The New York Yankees have been busy upgrading their roster after watching Juan Soto head across town to join the New York Mets. Now that Gleyber Torres will be playing for the Detroit Tigers in 2025, general manager Brian Cashman probably needs one more infielder. Could they be targeting Gold Glove Award winner Ha-Seong Kim?
Kim has been linked to the Bombers multiple times throughout the winter, but the infielder has remained on the open market. He's logged innings at second base, shortstop and third base, which would give the Bombers some flexibility regarding how they want to construct their infield alignment.
But will another team swoop in to sign the 29-year-old? The Athletic's Jim Bowden is predicting the San Diego Padres will be Kim's ultimate landing spot.
"The Giants had interest in Kim until they were able to land Willy Adames in free agency. Now, I think he'd fit great with the Red Sox, who could then keep Trevor Story at second base, allowing Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell another year of development at Triple-A," Bowden wrote. "However, the best team for Kim, without a doubt, is still the Padres. They also are a much better team with him at shortstop and Xander Bogaerts at second base than if they have to play Bogaerts at shortstop."
Season-ending shoulder surgery has hindered Kim's time on the market. Before the 2024 season, Tim Britton of The Athletic projected a four-year, $72 million deal for the infielder. That projection has since dropped to two years for $36 million.
