It appears as though Gleyber Torres' career with the New York Yankees is finally over.
On Friday morning, the New York Post's Jon Heyman reported Torres had agreed to a free-agency contract with the Detroit Tigers. It's a one-year, $15 million deal, per ESPN's Jesse Rogers.
Torres, 28, played seven seasons in the Bronx, peaking at the very beginning of his career. The righty was named an All-Star in 2018 and 2019, the first two seasons of his big league career.
In 2019, he smashed 38 home runs with a .871 OPS as it appeared he was headed for superstardom. However, he never quite recreated that magical season.
Nearly six years later, Torres' career with the Yankees is finally coming to a close.
The 28-year-old will head to Detroit to join a team that desperately needs to add offense. Last season, Detroit's front office gave up on the team at the trade deadline, opting to sell on players like Jack Flaherty. This ultimately came back to bite them as the Tigers surged to a postseason appearance.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, they didn't have the manpower to compete with the bigger and better teams in the postseason, no matter how well American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal would pitch.
Torres will likely replace Javier Baez in the lineup. Baez has played shortstop for the Tigers since being acquired, but he's struggled mightily.
Detroit will be able to use either Colt Keith, Trey Sweeney, or Torres at shortstop to replace Baez. Rogers has also reported that Torres will start at second base, which means Keith is headed for the bench or shortstop.
There have been rumors in the past indicating Torres may not want to move from second base, but only time will tell what his role will be in Detroit.
