Best Fitness Tracker For Sleep
Oura Ring Gen3 Horizon, Silver ($349)
If you don't want to wear a band around your wrist, the Oura Ring is a more subtle choice with some serious fitness tracking capabilities. Athletes Lindsay Vonn and Katie Ledecky love it for its accuracy and wearability. We love it for its detailed sleep data and cycle tracking.
"For me, the most useful application has been tracking my sleep," one PS editor wrote in her product review. "I found that, in fact, when I got a sleep score lower than 80, I did feel more sluggish during the day." The Oura Ring also boasts up to seven days of battery life, and includes many other metrics like heart rate monitoring and step calculation.
Best Fitness Tracker For Daily Activity
Google Pixel Watch 3, Polished Silver Aluminum Case - Porcelain Band ($350, originally $400)
If you're looking to gain more insight into your everyday wellness, the Google Pixel Watch 3 can help you get there. This tracker reports on everything from heart rate to workout intensity. It can also detect stress, track sleep, and will deliver a morning brief summarizing your insights so you feel ready to take on the day.
"One of my favorite parts of the Pixel Watch 3 was the morning brief, which is automatically delivered every morning as soon as you wake up," one PS editor wrote in her full review. "This is intended to set you up for success by recapping your daily readiness score, heart rate variability, exercise goals, and ending with a quick look at the weather. It's one thing to say you're going to hit the gym five times a week, for instance, but when you wake up and your morning brief informs you that you've only been once . . . it really has a way of motivating you."
Best Fitness Tracker For Recovery
WHOOP 4.0 with 12 Month Subscription ($239)
Whoop is one of the only trackers on the market that doesn't have a screen — but don't mistake it for being low-tech. It's actually one of the most advanced wearables on the market, helping you understand your daily activity, sleep cycle, and more. In fact, athletes like LeBron James, Michael Phelps, and Sha'Carri Richardson have all used Whoop for performance insights and recovery. One of Whoop's more unique insights is the personalized recovery score, which helps the user understand their body's overall readiness.
"As a strength coach, I primarily use my Whoop 4.0 to help with tracking training volume in the gym, outdoor adventures, and sleep and recovery," a PS staff writer wrote in her full review. "I wear it every day, and it made me realize how objective data can be helpful for self-reflection and making lifestyle behavioral changes, particularly when it comes to sleep hygiene (or lack thereof) and finding small ways to adjust activity or add opportunities for rest throughout the week."
Best Discreet Fitness Tracker
Samsung Galaxy Ring, Black ($400)
The Samsung Galaxy Ring is a chic fitness tracker that comes equipped with personalized AI sleep coaching tips, stress level tracking, and a daily energy score.
"It's possible I dug the sleep features because I love being complimented, and the Galaxy Ring designated me as a 'lion' or 'level 4' sleeper, the highest level," a PS contributor wrote in her full review. "Another feature I enjoyed was the Galaxy Ring's stress level tracking. You can see the peaks and valleys of stress throughout the day, which seemed to pretty much perfectly align with when I was up against a deadline or in a crowded grocery store line." The Galaxy Ring will also automatically track your workouts (from a casual walk to a full-on gym sesh) without you having to manually push "start."
Best Fitness Tracker For the Outdoors
Apple Watch Ultra 2, Navy Ocean Band ($769)
This fitness tracker is a true all-in-one device designed for outdoor activity. Just to be sure, one former PS editor tested it from above the Arctic Circle. "The new customizable 'action button' on the left side of the screen makes controlling the Watch even more personalized," this editor wrote in her full review. "I could set it, for example, to start a workout, mark a waypoint, act as a stopwatch, or turn on the flashlight, which came in handy while chasing the Northern Lights."
Plus, she was able to use the fitness tracker while wearing fleece gloves on a hike and neoprene surfing mittens.
Best Fitness Tracker For Wheelchair Users
Garmin vívoactive 5, Orchid ($250, originally $300)
Something unique about the Garmin vívoactive 5 is its ability to track daily wheelchair pushes and give weight shift alerts. It also features sports apps and workouts for wheelchair users, making it one of the more accessible fitness trackers on the market. Not to mention, the battery lasts several days, so you can gain all sorts of insights — including sleep score, heart rate, and overall energy — without worrying about a charge.
"I'm really interested in the Body Battery function which wasn't on the Vivoactive 3," one Amazon reviewer writes. "As your energy goes down, the Body Battery number goes down, so it seemed to reflect my real-life energy level. Sleep score is another great feature. I found that I don't sleep well. That's a challenge for me to work on, very insightful to know this."
Best Fitness Tracker For Beginners
Fitbit Charge 6 Fitness Tracker, Black Case w/ Black Band ($130, originally $160)
If you want to try a fitness tracker without investing a ton of money, the Fitbit Charge 6 may be a great place to start. It can track everything from the calories you burn, to the minutes you spend in your "active zone." Plus, you'll learn more about your daily readiness and sleep.
"The info I get from the sleep tracking has been a great help. I have a better idea of my activity level, which is actually a lot more than I thought," one reviewer writes. "I didn't use it to track exercise (yet) but that would be a valuable feature if you do. It also has the feature for tracking your stress management techniques." Not to mention, this fitness tracker is waterproof, so you can wear it while swimming. The price also includes a six-month premium membership so you can explore all the wellness tools Fitbit has to offer.
Best Fitness Tracker For Runners
Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar, Whitestone ($473, originally $600)
If you're competing in triathlons, training for a race, or getting back into running, odds are, you're going to like the Garmin Forerunner 955. It's the wearable of choice for people who are always in motion, using multiple satellites to track your movement. This version also includes detailed mapping, training tips, and solar charging, with up to 49 hours of battery life.
"I love the ease of use, great tracking for running and swimming," one reviewer writes. "Easy to start, pause and stop workouts."
