90s band lead singer launches crowdfunder after being ‘disfigured’ by a medical injury

Karyn Crisis, known for being the former lead singer of the 90s metal band Crisis, has launched a GoFundMe to help her recover from a ‘medical injury.’

Now the lead singer of the band Gospel Of Witches, Karyn told fans that nearly three years ago she was left ‘disabled and disfigured’ after being prescribed topical steroids.

She posted a link to the fund – which was created by her friend Davide Tiso – on Instagram.

Karyn wrote in the intro for the fund: ‘2 years and 10 months ago I was medically injured, which as left me disabled and disfigured and facing unpredictable and violent attacks of pain daily, along with other complications.

‘I don’t recognize myself in the mirror, which is the least of my issues in taking care of myself. I can only walk on one foot, hobble, a few blocks. I cannot wear regular shoes.

‘I have to customize them. I cannot regulate my body temperature: I am boiling hot and freezing cold at the same time.’

She continued, saying: ‘Perhaps you’ve heard over social media that a lot of us are going through TSW: topical steroid withdrawal/red skin syndrome/ corticosteroid withdrawal. Meaning, at some point in our lives we took topical creams or prednisone as prescribed by allopathic doctors and now our bodies are rebelling and purging this out not just from the skin, but from the major organs.

‘It’s an entire body healing and re-organizing since this medication depletes minerals, changes how our skin creates oils, and many other things. It’s an apocalyptic process. It’s really unpredictable. Until recently, it was hard to open my mouth to eat so no singing right now.

‘Sometimes the pain makes me unable to focus my mind, other times I seize the moments where I’m clear and calm. I live life more slowly because I cannot be active as I was before.’

What is Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)?

According to the National Eczema Association: ‘Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW), a serious potential side effect of topical steroid use that is not readily recognized by patients and providers. Much is still unknown about this condition, most notably how often it happens and the amount of topical steroid use that causes it to occur. While we believe topical steroids have a role to play in the management of eczema, it’s important for the eczema community to be aware of TSW. Many people with similar conditions, such as papulopustular, rosacea and psoriasis use topical steroids for management and should be aware of TSW as well.’

Symptoms may include:

  • Depression and disability, if withdrawal persists for a longer period of time
  • A burning sensation
  • Flaking, shedding, peeling, or spreading skin
  • Swelling or dermatoses in affected areas
  • Erythema, or redness of the skin
  • Wrinkling, thin skin
  • Oozing, pus-filled bumps
  • Steroid dermatitis, which can cause nodules and papules to form on the skin
  • Pain
  • Insomnia
  • Hair loss
  • Shivering
  • Fatigue

‘Unless you’ve been through this, it’s difficult to explain and has only been recently accepted by the medical field,’ she added.

She goes on to explain that her condition includes hot flashes, intense pain, and dermatological  ‘oozing, peeling, swelling, burning and more.’

The singer also shared that she’d been housebound and walking with crutches.

Karyn goes on to explain why she requires financial support during this time: ‘Why I need help: The dermatologist who prescribed these said she’d help me get disability, but when I made the appointment for that, she gaslighted me and only wrote a “note” and refused to help with the disability process. I still need : physical therapy for my feet since I’ve not been able to walk on one and both are mangled due to walking on ti[ toes and strange ways to get by.

‘I have other issues needing to tend to. I’ve found a practitioner to help with some symptom support. I don’t know when I’ll be better. I’ve already had some moments where I thought everything was healing up, only for the cycles to begin again.’

Crisis has raised a total of $11,986 so far (£9,821), more than double her original goal.

Crisis was an American heavy metal band, formed in New York City in 1993, who made a major splash on the scene.

Founded by Karyn Crisis, guitarist Afzaal Nasiruddeen, bassist Gia Chuan Wang, and drummer Fred Waring III, the band was only together for four albums but is remembered among metal fans as a groundbreaking group.
