Alex Bregman Favored To Sign $150-Plus Million Deal With AL Powerhouse

The Alex Bregman sweepstakes appears to be down to five teams: the Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays.

While each of these five teams has been closely connected to Bregman for the majority of the offseason, only one will land his services for the 2025 season and beyond.

Michael Shapiro of the Houston Chronicle recently tabbed the Astros as the favorites to come out on top of the Bregman sweepstakes.

"This is a bit reductive, but stay with me here: If another team was going to blow past Houston's $156 million offer, wouldn't they have already? What, exactly, is the holdup? Both New York clubs are reportedly out of the Bregman market," Shapiro wrote. "The Dodgers already reloaded this winter. The other aforementioned clubs aren't reportedly crossing Houston's standing offer, leaving a strange stalemate as February approaches.

"Bregman's agent, Scott Boras, will likely loathe accepting an offer below his intended target. Bregman himself may feel a dinged sense of pride. But Houston general manager Dana Brown keeping the door open for a Bregman return is telling. The Astros are ready to re-install Bregman as their third baseman and clubhouse leader."

It's hard to pick a team over the Astros in this sweepstakes. If the Tigers, Red Sox, Cubs, or Blue Jays were going to give Bregman the $180 million to $200 million deal he's reportedly looking for, they likely would have done it by now.

With the Astros turning back to Bregman and clearing some money by trading away Ryan Pressly, it seems like they have their sights set on a reunion with the star third baseman.

But anything can happen. The Arizona Diamondbacks stole Corbin Burnes from the San Francisco Giants in a shocking move. Anything can happen with Bregman as well.
