For years, gamers have wanted a sequel to Okami, the gorgeous and innovative action RPG from Hideki Kamiya and Clover Studio, a now-shuttered division within Capcom. Now, after 18 years, gamers are getting that wish, after Kamiya's new studio, CLOVERS, and Capcom announced a sequel at The Game Awards.
Okami 2 was shown off at The Game Awards with a brief teaser, officially lifting the lid on Kamiya's new CLOVERS studio and announcing a return to the world of Okami 18 years after the original game was released on PS2. The trailer showed the smallest of glimpses of Amaterasu running through a field, with painterly style intact.
Okami is a cult classic game from Capcom that was released on the PS2 all the way back in 2006 at the very tail end of the PS2's life. The game was adored by critics and fans, who praised its unique painterly art style and innovative action gameplay, but unfortunately sold quite poorly initially. Kamiya expressed in a recent interview that he wished he'd had a better team to work on the game, and that the final product was a little bit lacking.
Kamiya ultimately left Capcom after Okami's release, and went on to found PlatinumGames, the studio that developed games like Bayonetta, Vanquish, Astral Chain, and Nier: Automata. He parted ways with the company in 2023, and is back now with CLOVERS, which seems to be named after his old Clover Studio.
No release date was given for the Okami sequel, nor were platforms.
