Badu was recognized at the annual affair.
At the 2024 CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Awards, Erykah Badu was honored with the Fashion Icon Award. Presenting her with the esteemed accolade was her former partner and current coparent, André 3000.
Ahead of her acceptance, the New Blue Sun artist paid tribute to his “great, great friend.”
“When Erykah said to me, ‘I got some good news to tell you,’ I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know if she was gonna say, ‘I’m pregnant’ or ‘I’m in a new relationship,’” Three Stacks teased. “So then she lets me know, ‘I’m getting the CFDA Award, Fashion Icon Award.’ And then our excitement and celebration, we said something like, ‘Wooo! This the one. And what took ’em so damn long to recognize?’”
André then praised his ex when stating, “Erykah is one of the most original and unique human beings I’ve ever known. Her style is truly original. She’s an inspiration to everyone she meets. She’s an iconoclast, an outcast, a warrior, rule-breaker, educator, activist, magician, seer, songwriter, singer, mother and a great, great friend.”
He concluded by expressing, “She makes the world a brighter, more colorful, joyous, committed and meaningful place to be.”
Badu took the stage moments later, first hugging her “Hello” costar, whom she referred to as her “best friend.” She then referenced her hit record, “Tyrone,” when asking the crowd, “Sistas, how y’all feel? Brothers, can y’all dress?”
Answering her own rhetorical question, the singer replied, “Well, I can and that’s why I’m here because this is sport for me. I don’t feel right if I don’t leave the house and my s**t’s not together. It’s something I need to do, want to do. It’s my therapy, it’s my workout, it’s my husband — no offense.”
During her eight-minute speech, the Baduizm songbird freestyled her sentiments and pieced together countless memories of how fashion, style, color, and jewelry influenced her life. “They are my power, my personal power. I have a relationship with them and the world is a private joke between me and my things […] What I’m tryna say is I can dress,” Badu joked.
This latest André and Erykah reunion comes after she joined him during the Dallas stop of his New Blue Sun tour.
