Andy Samberg almost had a wardrobe malfunction while filming a music video for Saturday Night Live with Charli XCX.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine alum recently revealed on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast what it was like filming the “Here I Go” sketch with the pop star while wearing super short shorts.
“There was a lot of debate about how high my shorts should be,” Samberg explained. “And I kept being like, ‘Well Charli’s are gonna be pretty high because that’s how she rolls, so I should really have mine high.'”
While Samberg considered wearing the “exact same outfit” as Charli for a moment, which featured short red shorts and a bikini top, he quickly realized that might not go over well.
“I was like, well no, I don’t think anybody actually wants to see that, despite what they might think,” he joked, before admitting that he initially asked the costume department to cut his shorts even shorter. “They cut them higher and I was like, ‘I don’t know, maybe I should go higher.’ And then as soon as we started, like, really dancing, I really almost flopped out. I was like, ‘Oh no!'”
The comedian added, “Thank God we did not make it any higher cause it would have been really bad.”
The “Here I Go” sketch featured Samberg playing an annoying homeowner who calls the cops on everyone in their neighborhood. And the “Brat” singer plays his just-as-annoying wife who pops up in the second half of the music video. The digital exclusive video was part of the Nov. 16 SNL episode, which saw Charli as the host and musical guest.
“It is very funny that it was not originally written to have a wife in it because it is so perfect,” co-host Seth Meyers said on the podcast. “I love the reveal just knowing that Charli XCX was standing behind you. It’s just really funny to think about, like, a giant musical superstar at that level agreeing to do something like this, and then her reveal is just sort of crouching behind Andy.” Samberg added, “Welcome to showbiz!”
