The Houston Astros are desperately looking for a corner infielder this winter. They came into the offseason needing to add both a third baseman and a first baseman. The Astros recently acquired All-Star corner infielder Isaac Paredes, who could play either of the corner infield spots.
While a reunion with Alex Bregman is the dream, it doesn't seem very likely. Houston recently tried to trade for St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Arenado, but Arenado reportedly trumped the deal with his no-trade clause.
Cody Williams of FanSided recently predicted the Astros would look to sign an intriguing option. Williams suggests Houston could be a dark horse candidate to sign veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.
"While I understand that trepidation, though, the acquisition of Isaac Paredes in the Kyle Tucker trade and his versatility at the corners could offer Houston the flexibility to pursue a first baseman instead of another third baseman," Williams wrote. "Moreover, the Astros' involvement in the Arenado trade at all shows that they're willing to bet on history and bounce-backs but prefer to do so at limited cost. While Pete Alonso and Christian Walker are obviously higher-upside first base options if Houston were to explore that route with Paredes in tow, Goldschmidt is almost surely more likely to align with their preferred price range."
This could work as a last resort for Houston. There are better options out there. A reunion with Bregman should be the No. 1 priority, but that still doesn't feel likely. There is still a chance that Houston signs first baseman Pete Alonso or Christian Walker to man first base.
If all else fails, Goldschmidt could be a good choice. He would be very affordable and his production would be better than what Houston has seen at the position for years.
