This offseason is incredibly important for the Atlanta Braves. It's important for each team, but after Atlanta under-performed mightily in 2024, it needs to improve the roster a lot heading into 2025.
Atlanta has a few key players heading into free agency, led by the starting pitching duo of Charlie Morton and Max Fried.
FanSided's Jacob Mountz recently put together three free agents for Atlanta to pursue and two to avoid. Surprisingly, Mountz recommended the Braves avoid signing Fried and Milwaukee Brewers infielder Willy Adames.
Instead, Mountz recommended the Braves attempt to save money by signing the trio of Chicago White Sox pitcher Michael Soroka, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler, and San Diego Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar. Mountz's plan revolved around saving money.
"This offseason, Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos is taking a more frugal approach. Rather than chase a top free agent, he is cutting salary like he did in trading Jorge Soler and looking for bargains hoping to stay under the third luxury tax bracket," Mountz wrote. "Over the years, Anthopoulos has traded for and signed diamonds in the rough such as Chris Sale, Reynaldo Lopez, Joc Pederson, and the aforementioned Soler quite triumphantly."
This trio of players is quite intriguing. Profar and Buehler would be solid additions to the roster, but Atlanta could still use another starting pitcher and potentially an infielder.
But, if the goal is to save money while adding players at the same time, this works very well. This trio is only projected to land a total of $31 million in free agency this winter, per Spotrac.
