Ridley Scott is channeling his “American Gangster” era post-“Gladiator II.”

Scott directs the first episode of the Apple TV+ series “Dope Thief,” which stars Brian Tyree Henry as a robber who becomes caught up in a narcotics empire. Henry and Scott both executive produce the series alongside creator Peter Craig (“The Batman,” “Top Gun: Maverick”).

The official synopsis for “Dope Thief” reads: “Based on Dennis Tafoya’s book of the same name, the series follows long-time Philly friends and delinquents who pose as DEA agents to rob an unknown house in the countryside, only to have their small-time grift become a life-and-death enterprise, as they unwittingly reveal and unravel the biggest hidden narcotics corridor on the Eastern seaboard.”

Wagner Moura, Marin Ireland, Kate Mulgrew, Nesta Cooper, Amir Arison, and Ving Rhames co-star.

The eight-episode crime drama hails from Apple Studios and is a Scott Free Production. The series is executive produced by Craig alongside Scott, as well as David W. Zucker, Richard Heus, Henry, Jordan Sheehan, Clayton Krueger, and Jennifer Wiley-Moxley.

“Dope Thief” is a reunion between Henry and Apple, as Henry was previously nominated for an Oscar for his turn in the Apple original “Causeway” alongside Jennifer Lawrence. Henry, best known for “Atlanta,” “Bullet Train,” and as a voice in the “Spider-Verse” films, is also getting some buzz for “The Fire Inside,” which was written and produced by Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins.

Meanwhile, up next for Scott, he has teased a possible “Gladiator III” to round out the trilogy. He also will soon reunite with “Gladiator II” actor Paul Mescal for “The Dog Stars.”

“Dope Thief” premieres with the first two episodes on Friday, March 14, 2025 followed by new episodes every Friday through April 25, on Apple TV+. Check out the first look photos below.
