An orange cat named Mitty walked in on his owner taking a relaxing bath, and what he did next has shocked internet users.
In a viral TikTok video shared on Monday by his owner, under the username @mitty_kitteh, the polydactyl cat can be seen walking by the edge of the bathtub, before dipping his face in the hot water and drinking it like soup.
"Mitty, it's hot! Mittens!" his owner warns the feline, who disregards her warning and keeps drinking as if he really likes the taste of it. "Good soup!" she adds.
While Mitty clearly has no issues around water, most cats usually try their best to avoid it, and while there can be many reasons behind this behavior, there are also ways to help change their mind about it. Newsweek reached out to @mitty_kitteh for comment via TikTok comments. We could not verify the details of the case.
The main reason cats don't like water is down to genetics, according to a Catster article medically reviewed by Dr. Paola Cuevas. It explains that their ancestors in the wild were not exposed to water, so it is not a familiar element.
Another reason is that it can make their coat feel very heavy, and it usually takes hours for it to dry off completely. Additionally, cats love being in control, and water makes them feel constrained.
Dr. Jess Kirk says on Vet Explains Pets that you may be able to slowly acclimate your feline to water using positive reinforcement techniques and giving them all the time they need.
However, it is important to respect your cat's feelings, and avoid forcing them into the water if they won't stop being uncomfortable around it.
The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 294,100 views and more than 39,100 likes on the platform.
One user, Tyler S355, commented: "I was worried they were gonna fall in but then I saw those monster grippers and all my fears were quelled."
Meghan Pershern posted: "My cat would try and drink my dads shaving water every morning. He finally started giving him his own bowl of hot water or his morning 'tea' and did that for 19 years."
