Cauliflower is a beloved winter vegetable, whether it's roasted as a side dish for a comforting Sunday roast or transformed into a rich, aromatic curry.
However, despite its versatility and delicious flavour, many people unknowingly make storage mistakes that can cause their cauliflower to spoil prematurely.
According to Vlatka Lake, storage expert at Space Station, there are a few key tips to keep your cauliflower fresh for up to 10 days, ensuring you make the most of this nutritious vegetable.
An expert told Express.co.uk that one of the most important things to remember when storing cauliflower is to keep it whole.
She explained: “If you are buying a full head and plan to separate out the florets, you should only do so immediately prior to consuming, as cauliflower is best preserved when stored fully intact.”

Breaking it down too early exposes the florets to air and moisture, which accelerates the spoiling process.
Don’t wash it before storing
Another common mistake is washing cauliflower before it’s stored.
While it might seem like a good idea to clean it right away, excess moisture can actually speed up its deterioration.
Vlatka advised: “It’s important that you don’t wash your cauliflower before stowing it away. As tempting as it may be to give it a quick rinse after purchase, this may actually speed up the process of decay, as excess moisture leads to the growth of unwelcome mould. Instead, pat it dry and only thoroughly wash it once you come to prep it, ready to eat.”

By keeping moisture at bay, you can prevent the growth of mould and ensure your cauliflower stays fresh for longer.
Prevent condensation with proper storage
For those buying pre-wrapped cauliflower, it’s essential to remove the packaging and replace it with a breathable bag.
Vlatka suggested: "Select a sturdy and sealable plastic bag, before piercing a few holes in it. This will not only allow your cauliflower room to breathe but will also help prevent any build-up of excess moisture."
For added protection, line the bag with dry paper towels or kitchen roll to absorb any condensation.
When storing the whole head, it’s also beneficial to place it with the stem facing upwards, as this position helps maintain freshness by keeping the vegetable dry and allowing it to "breathe".
By following these simple tips, you can extend the life of your cauliflower and reduce waste.
With just a little extra care, your cauliflower can stay fresh for up to 10 days, ensuring it’s ready for whatever delicious dish you decide to make.
