"It's hurtful because people say, 'It's lonely at the top,' but damn, this lonely?"
Boxer Claressa Shields found major success in the ring, and is now discussing how her fame has affected her relationships with family and close friends. During a chat with ATS Fight, the Olympic gold-medalist emotionally revealed that many of her relationships have taken a hit due to the entitlement of those around her.
“Listen, I done bought every last one of my siblings a car,” she explained. “Bought my mama a house, my mama two cars, my daddy a car, help him with his bills, help mama with her bills, help my sister take care of her three kids, her three kids lived with me! I go to sit with the teachers, go to parent-teacher conferences, I do all this stuff, and it seem like the more you do, the more that they don’t like you!”
Honing in on her rocky relationship with her sister, Shields teared up as she continued, “I overlooked how much my sister, you know, started disliking me. I didn’t know. I never done nothing to her. I don’t want to get emotional, but me and my sister got the same mama and the same daddy and we grew up together…You work so hard to make all this money, and to have a good life for yourself, and then the people you want to share it with, they just change on you. And it’s hurtful because people say, ‘It’s lonely at the top,’ but damn, this lonely?”
She later dropped a gem when she added, “People don’t want what you give them, they want what you have, and that there, you can’t have. You can’t have what I done worked hard for.” Check out the full segment below.
Known for making headlines as a pro boxer, Shields recently entered the pop culture zeitgeist via relationship drama involving soon-to-be-exes, Remy Ma and Papoose. The fighter is reportedly dating the Brooklyn rapper, with Remy putting the couple on blast by posting their private texts messages — including Shields phone number — on social media. The move, according to Shields, is the reason she’s willing to square up with the Bronx MC.
“I’m a business woman, don’t leak my number,” Shields shared on Spolitics with Jemele Hill. “Why would you do that? Drama sells. I’m not in that beef. My smoke with her is posting my number. So, people like, ‘Oh, she wants to fight her over a dude,’ stop it. Stop it. That is so beneath me.”
