A pair of twins are going viral for how remarkably different they look, despite sharing the same birthday.
Aspen and Storie, from California, are the result of two separate eggs being fertilized by different sperm cells, causing their striking contrast in appearance.
"Fraternal twins are not common—just 23 in every 1,000 births. However, typically, twins at least look related," mom Katelyn Cheo told Newsweek.
In a short clip posted by Cheo, the two girls sit between their parents while Cheo kisses her husband Scott and put their heads closest to the twin that most looks like them. Storie, who is brunette, looks just like her father, while Aspen has blonde hair that takes after her mom.
"It's literally like one twin took every Chinese gene that my husband had, while the other took every Caucasian one I have," Cheo said.
The text overlay reads: "When your genes split in half and one twin looks like dad and one twin looks like mom."
Cheo captioned her video: "Genetics are wild." She explained the spectrum of their children and how Storie and Aspen are on opposite ends. "One being our lightest kid and one being our darkest. It's incredible what genetics can play out in a family and how there can be so many variables," Cheo added.
Their difference in appearance was evident from the moment the twins were born. "We had a plan going into birth that if they looked similar, we would paint one of their toenails to tell them apart, but as soon as they were born we were shocked at how different they were," Cheo said.
The Cheos are no strangers to family resemblance, having six other children. "In our opinion all of our other kids looked kind of similar at birth, but not these two," she said.
The clip, which has clocked up over 6.5 million views on TikTok, with thousands totally fascinated by the two girls. One called Storie and Aspen the "most unique" pair of fraternal twins they'd ever seen. "Wait, this is crazy," another wrote.
The "opposite twins" have become a source of amazement even outside of the internet and Cheo told Newsweek that most people don't believe that Aspen and Storie are twin sisters.
"If we are out and about, people assume they are just best friends. When they say they are twins, I often have to step in and confirm it's true and that they aren't just pretending," Cheo said.
