'Critical' Fire Warning Issued in Southern California Amid Strong Winds

What's New

The National Weather Service (NWS) posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday warning residents in parts of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties that there are winds that could lead to "critical" fire conditions.

The NWS said on X, "Gusty northeast winds and dry conditions will lead to critical fire weather conditions for Santa Ana wind prone areas in Los Angeles and Ventura County this afternoon through Wednesday afternoon. Report any smoke or fires to authorities and take care with fire ignition sources."

Why It Matters

The NWS warns that if a fire ignites the current conditions are "favorable" for rapid fire, including wildfires, that may threaten life and property.

"Use extreme caution with anything that can spark a wildfire. Residents near wildland interfaces should be prepared to evacuate if a wildfire breaks out," NWS says.

The NWS also warned of "extreme fire behavior."

What To Know

The NWS said that Santa Ana winds "will increase" and peak Tuesday night until Wednesday morning across western Los Angeles County and Ventura County.

Wind gusts may range 40 to 60 mph in the mountains. The NWS warns that these gusts with minimum humidity will lead to "critical Red Flag fire weather conditions."

The warning is in effect for 3 p.m. Tuesday until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

What People Are Saying

NWS Meteorologist Joe Sirard told Newsweek via phone on Tuesday that a red flag warning this time of year is "not that typical." Sirad said that it has been "exceptionally dry" and "Anytime you get these conditions with little rain, we get a red flag warning." Sirard also added that it is "very dangerous" to fight fires that could erupt from these critical fire conditions.

Fox 11 Reporter Gigi Graciette said on X, formerly Twitter, "The #FranklinFire in Malibu, CA is now 63% contained but with another Red Flag Warning today, there is concern the Santa Ana winds could cause the fire to spread. Dozens of homes were either lost or damaged in the fire."

The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services said on X, "As @Cal_OES prepositions resources and equipment in @CountyVentura and @CountyofLA, it's important to remember to take proactive steps now to stay safe during red flag warnings."

What Happens Next

Sirard told Newsweek, "Next week there's a chance of some rain with a weather system moving in." The Los Angeles area is also in the rainy season months from November to April, Sirard added.
