Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has announced his resignation amid looming trials for high profile defendants Mayor Eric Adams and Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Nominated by President Joe Biden for the position in 2021, Williams’ resignation will be effective Dec. 13 at 11:59 p.m., according to NBC 4 NY. This will mark the end of a transformative era in one of the nation’s most prestigious prosecutorial offices.

Ed Kim, Williams’ deputy, will assume the role of acting U.S. Attorney beginning December 14.

“Today is a bittersweet day for me,” Williams stated. “It is bitter in the sense that I am leaving my dream job, leading an institution I love that is filled with the finest public servants in the world. It is sweet in that I am confident I am leaving at a time when the Office is functioning at an incredibly high level – upholding and exceeding its already high standard of excellence, integrity, and independence.”

Williams’ tenure has been marked by high-profile prosecutions, including the indictment of New York City Mayor Eric Adams on federal corruption charges last month, and the ongoing case against rap mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, who faces federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges.

His sudden resignation comes amid speculation surrounding President Donald Trump’s plans to nominate former SEC Chair Jay Clayton to the position once Trump assumes office.

A respected figure in legal circles, Williams, the first Black U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, brought a focus on combating corruption, financial crime, and systemic abuse. Under his leadership, the office upheld its reputation for independence and fearless pursuit of justice, often tackling cases with significant political implications.

This includes the high profile prosecutions and convictions of Sen. Robert Menendez, Sam Bankman-Fried, and other notable offenders.
