There’s a new version of hit show The Traitors coming to TV. The Traitors Ireland is set to premiere on Irish broadcaster RTÉ sometime in 2025.

This new adaptation of the psychological reality show will feature Derry Girls star Siobhán McSweeney as the show’s host. She’s a real hoot, so it’s going to be a fun expansion, that’s for sure!

The Traitors Ireland joins an international family

The Traitors Ireland is just the latest ideation of the popular competition show. Besides the U.K. and U.S. versions, there are also shows in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Of the over 30 adaptations of the show, which originated in the Netherlands, only five are in English. The show is truly an international sensation.

The Irish version will be produced by Kite Entertainment, under license from All3Media International. Following a national casting call earlier in 2024, The Traitors Ireland will film on location in Ireland. But unlike the U.S. version hosted by Scottish star Alan Cumming, the Irish show will not feature celebrity contestants.

The show’s format has 22 contestants competing for a potential prize of €50,000 ($52,460 American dollars). At the beginning of the game, the show’s host will secretly select a small group of Traitors from the group. These Traitors will attempt to eliminate the remaining Faithfuls, either by voting them out or via a nightly “murder.”

At the end of the game, if the Faithfuls have failed to identify and eliminate all of the Traitors, the Traitors will take home the winnings, leaving the Faithfuls empty-handed.

Who is Siobhán McSweeney?

Siobhán is a familiar face to fans of U.K. television as Sister Michael in the Irish coming-of-age story Derry Girls. The show follows a group of teenage girls, as they grow up in a world of armed police and British Army check points in 1990s Northern Ireland. The show ran for three seasons, from 2018 to 2022.

“Like everyone, I am a huge Traitors fan,” Siobhán confessed. “So when I was asked to host the Irish version, I jumped at the chance. I’m looking forward to meeting our loyal Faithful and delicious Traitors. The Irish have a charm and ability to deceive while smiling which will make this version rather special, I think.”

“And I’m the luckiest person in the world to watch them close up,” she added.

Besides being immensely popular around the globe, The Traitors’ success includes an Emmy for the U.S. version on Peacock and a BAFTA for the U.K. version on BBC One. The British version drew eight million viewers for its Season 2 finale, which is a lot for the U.K. The U.S. version has been renewed through Season 5, while the U.K. show has been extended to a fourth season, in addition to a celebrity version.

Meanwhile, the American version of The Traitors premieres with Season 3, January 9, 2025, on Peacock.
