Ellen DeGeneres is still stinging from floods of rotten reviews for her big Netflix comedy comeback and a source exclusively tells In Touch the bad blood has spilled into her marriage and left her and Portia De Rossi facing a serious rocky patch.
“Ellen is something like a deposed dictator as far as her reputation in show business is concerned,” explains a longtime associate of the couple. “She is incredibly famous. She has a massive fortune, but all of her power and influence are gone and don’t seem like they’re ever coming back.”
The talk show tyrant, 66, told fans and haters alike she chose to close shop on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2021, which many attribute to scathing accusations from 10 former employees, who alleged she created a “toxic” workplace on set through an atmosphere of “racism, fear, and intimidation.”
After taking some time out of the spotlight – a common move for canceled celebs – Ellen attempted to win her audience back by releasing an hour-long comedy special, For Your Approval, a move which most did not, in fact, approve of.
“To put it mildly, Ellen’s Netflix special did nothing to reverse her bad reputation,” the source states plainly.
In fact, the desperate relaunch of her career fell so flat on its face the miserable incident “has only intensified the talk among Ellen and Portia’s remaining pals in Hollywood that their marriage is in terrible shape.”
The source argues that the comedian failed to learn a thing from her days as queen of mean running her talk that led to her ignominious downfall.
“It all comes down to Ellen’s defiant, disagreeable tone in the special, and the assumption people make that something has to have changed massively behind the scenes in years since Ellen retired from her show.”
With the disaster unfolding in real time around Ellen, a second source previously told In Touch the T.V. host is calling it quits “to focus on herself and live away from the spotlight.”
“Ellen is still angry and she’s had enough,” confided the insider. “Her final comedy special is the last time anyone will see her in the public eye.”
While she may be hiding from the camera – and irate former fans – Ellen is still trying to capitalize on her waning fame with a new skincare line she started with wife Portia, 51, Kind Science, a name some find a bit ironic.
“Ellen starting a skin care business with Portia reeks of desperation and suggests that it’s hell at home if they need this new project to work on,” the first source adds, noting that the celebrity skin care space is already oversaturated with brands from the likes of Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Hailey Bieber, Kylie Jenner and Jessica Alba.
“It really is the strangest marriage in Hollywood because of all the wacky schemes Ellen has dragged them into as a couple, and a lot of Ellen’s side hustles evaporated after her scandal.”
“People can tell that something is ‘off,’” the first source continues, “because they’ve never really seen Ellen like this before.”
