Taking to the stage at the Golden Globes, Sir Elton John quipped about his sight loss while presenting the best original score film award. The 77 year old music icon opened up in a September Instagram update about the vision issues in his right eye caused by an infection last summer.

Elton revealed he had lost his sight after contracting an infection while holidaying in the South of France. The star said: "Over the summer, I've been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye. I am healing, but it's an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.

"I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks. I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far. With love and gratitude."

At the Golden Globes, alongside Never Too Late collaborator Brandi Carlile, he reassured the star-studded audience saying: "There has been a lot of stories going ... around about my regressive eyesight, and I just want to reassure everyone it is not as bad as it seems, I’m so pleased to be here with my co-host, Rihanna."

When Carlile announced the victory of American musician Trent Reznor and British composer Atticus Ross for their erotic drama Challengers score, featuring Zendaya, John couldn't contain his excitement, proclaiming "yay". The grateful winners expressed their thanks to Zendaya and fellow cast for their support.

Previously, John had lamented the detrimental impact of a “severe eye infection” on his vision, noting he was “healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye”.

He referenced this personal challenge during the December grand opening of The Devil Wears Prada, for which he composed the music, admitting: "I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight. So it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight."

Sir Elton's final UK performance was his headline set at Glastonbury in 2023, part of his epic 330-date Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which he concluded with an emotionally charged show in Stockholm, Sweden. Earlier this year, Sir Elton joined the exclusive EGOT club – becoming the 19th performer to win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony.

He also boasts two Golden Globe wins for best original song - (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again from his biopic, Rocketman, and Can You Feel The Love Tonight? from the 1994 Disney film The Lion King.
