Like-for-like high street sales were up 18.54% in the week to 5 January, compared with a 1.55% fall for the same period last year, led by strong fashion sales, the BDO High Street Sales tracker shows.
Fashion saw its highest like-for-like sales growth since the first week of January 2023, up 22.93%, compared with a 0.44% fall in the same week last year.
Fashion store sales were up 17.42% from a base of a 0.12% increase for the same week last year. It marked the category’s best result since February 2023.
Total in-store like-for-like sales jumped by 15.16% while non-store sales rose by 19.12%.
Lifestyle sales climbed by 14.29% this week, followed by homeware, which was up 9.34%.
It comes after BRC-Sensormatic data showed high street footfall declined by 2.7% in December year on year.
Meanwhile, retailers including Next and Marks & Spencer have set a cautious tone for 2025, with price rises planned for the year ahead, despite strong Christmas sales.
