If the real estate agent looks familiar, that’s because he has been on TV before
Our latest watch is Netflix’s new real estate show, Selling The City, with the high-wheeling drama and dealings of Eleonora Srugo and her Douglas Elliman agency employees keeping us hooked. Alongside Jordyn Taylor Braff, Taylor Middleton, Jade Chan, Abigail Godfrey, Gisselle Meneses-Nunez and Steve Gold, Justin Tuinstra is one of the show’s star players, leading the team of agents. From the start, viewers were convinced that he looked familiar – and a Google search by dedicated watchers soon discovered his TV history. The former catalogue model, who started his career in real estate in 2008, is no stranger to reality TV or to Netflix.

He appeared on Netflix’s first dating series Dating Around in 2019, where he went viral for being a ‘chauvinistic a**hole’ according to his date Gurki Basra after he shouted at her and shared judgmental opinions on the show. ‘I was genuinely trying to get to know this guy. I was like, “He’s cute! He has a successful job. He’s well-spoken. He followed his career on his own, so he’s a hard-worker”,’ Gurki told Refinery29. ‘It took me awhile to process and realise, this is not going anywhere. And not only that, but he needs to be told.’

The date went downhill after he yelled at her over her arranged marriage. He also admitted to having double standards after he admitted that he expected his girlfriend to watch sports with him but wouldn’t go to yoga with her. She recalled, ‘At one point I asked if there are any deal breakers for you, and he said, “I would never go to yoga with my girlfriend. I don’t want to stand there and stretch with a bunch of gay dudes and chicks”. I was like, “Let me get this straight. Two minutes ago, you said your girlfriend ideally has to watch football with you, even if she’s not into it. But you never do yoga with her, even if you’re not into it?” That’s a huge f**king double standard.’ Later on the date, Justin admitted to Gurki that he forced an ex-girlfriend to get rid of her cat, then broke up with her. She realised that there was no future for them when they discussed their differing ideas of marriage, rooted in their cultural upbringings. Gurki, whose parents come from the Indian state of Punjab, had an arranged marriage, meeting her husband for the first time on their wedding day. She felt pressure from her family to marry her first boyfriend after they were dating for a certain amount of time. ‘That’s what you do in Indian culture. You date someone, you get married. I had doubts, but I went through with it anyway because I wasn’t sure,’ she told Justin. But the ‘small-town kid’ who hails from Midwest’s Wisconsin and Minnesota couldn’t and didn’t understand her perspective, calling her a ‘liar’. ‘Who says yes to getting married when you have doubts? You ruined eight years of your life. You lied to him and yourself,’ he told her. ‘You agreed to spend the rest of your life with friends and family, and it was a complete lie. How could I ever trust you? How would anyone ever trust you?’ The date soured once Gurki mentioned her divorce. ‘He immediately judged me, and it kind of went freakin’ downhill from there,’ she said. ‘He would get a drink, and he would not ask me if I needed a drink. There was a lot of judgment in the whole thing. At some point, I cracked. I was just like, “This guy is a chauvinistic a**hole”.’ Justin Tuinstra is a real estate agent and former model, now starring on Netflix's Selling The City. He moved to New York City in 2005 to pursue a modelling career but found that selling real estate proved more lucrative. He was first at CORE real estate company, before he moved to Douglas Elliman in 2011. He has closed over $500million in sales at his current agency and earned himself a reputation as one of NYC’s most adept market strategists. His net worth is estimated to be between $6 to $10million. While Google Trends shows there is search for whether or not Justin is currently seeing someone or has a wife, we can confirm that he's not married just yet - although whether or not he's dating anyone is unconfirmed. However, Justin and Eleonora were thought to be more than just co-workers after she revealed, ‘He took my virginity for a second time’ on Selling The City. She later explained that while they have slept together, they were never in a relationship. ‘Jade describes my time with Justin as a situationship, but it wasn’t even that. I literally hadn’t had sex for eight years because I was building my business. Basically, I was asexual. Justin and I had sex a few times and he helped me break the ice. That’s it. We didn’t date,’ Eleonora said. ‘He was a friend, he did me a favour. We had sex and we stayed friends. It was never a ‘situationship’ for either of us. In fact, I’m always on the lookout for a girl for him,’ she added. Shereen Low is a senior writer at Grazia UK.Who is Justin Tuinstra?
