Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is an upcoming action game from Skydance New Media, led by Uncharted alum Amy Hennig. The game made a big splash at Epic's State of Unreal showcase earlier this year, showcasing the game's high-fidelity graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5.

The developers have revealed the first look at Wakanda in the game, led by Azzuri aka King T'Chanda, T'Challa's grandfather at this point in the Marvel timeline.

"Wakanda at this point in time is hidden away from the outside world and protected by this impenetrable jungle," Hennig told Entertainment Weekly.

"They are non-interventionist, but events transpire that pull them into the conflict. They have to protect their interests. The world is getting smaller. No satellites yet, but there will be soon. You can shoot down planes that maybe want to fly over Wakanda, but how long can you stay in the shadows?"

The first trailer for the game also teased a mysterious super soldier being active in 1943. Given that the game's title points to HYDRA being the main antagonists, it's likely that characters like Red Skull and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier may play a pivotal role in it.

"In these kinds of stories, particularly when you have this unfolding mystery, you always want your MacGuffin to pull the characters along, that there is this impending threat and a shared object of desire," said Hennig.

Marvel 1943 has some incredible visuals thanks to using cinema-level assets in Unreal Engine 5. Hennig explains that the team wanted to ground the characters as much as possible to not lose viewers' engagement.

"We're entirely CG, so it's really easy to get ungrounded real quick," she said.

"You can see even the movies can fall under that trap; too much CG and you don't know the ground you're standing on. We really wanted the visual fidelity to be high so that you could kind of forget that you're looking at a game, that it should feel and look and sound and smell like you're watching a great Marvel movie or TV show, but you're driving the action."

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will be released in 2025. Until then, you can play Marvel Rivals, another UE5-powered game with heroes from the Marvel comics. To get a headstart in the multiplayer shooter, check out the best characters in the game ahead of its winter-themed event.
