Under the spell of Hangzhou’s West Lake at nightfall, Chanel unveiled its 2024/25 Métiers d’art collection, which served as a luminous homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s love of Coromandel art—traditional lacquered screens that famously inspired the interiors of her 31 Rue Cambon apartment—and the wonders of travel.
The blended charm of China’s Hangzhou, with its dichotomy of a rich history and modern vibrancy, set the stage for an evening where the past and future come together seamlessly. Against the backdrop of the West Lake’s distinct serenity, the collection reflected the ornate artistry and serenity of these traditional paintings, celebrated for their romantic depictions of everyday life. A colour palette of Jade green, sky blue, and delicate pink hues, along with Chanel’s signature black and white spectrum, channelled the founder’s cherished screens, as well as the flora and waters of the surrounding landscape.
The garments were a testament to Chanel’s enduring vision, bolstered and built upon for over a century. Long, shouldered coats in tweeds and velvets, accented with the old-world opulence of silk-lined pagoda sleeves, mandarin collars and detailed embroidery to achieve the understated luxury typical of the French house. Meanwhile, duffle coats with frogging details and wrap midi skirts paired with side-buttoned tuxedo jackets brought a contemporary edge to traditional tailoring.
Florals were abundant, with Lesage-embroidered camellias and lotus motifs gracing pleated dresses and sculptural suits. Hats by Maison Michel, mid-calf boots by Massaro, and jewellery inspired by ancient Chinese artifacts crafted by Goossens brought a range of Parisian artisans into the fold, as the House continues its search for a creative director.
Accessories played their part, too. Fleece pieces, cloud-shaped pearls, and pillow handbags added a playful yet refined touch, while sizeable travel bags and vanity cases echoed the collection’s theme of exploration.
To celebrate the evening, Perfect Days director Wim Wenders captured the essence of this voyage in a cinematic piece starring House ambassadors Tilda Swinton, Leah Dou, and Xin Zhilei. Their performances embodied the collection’s themes of mystery and the transformative power of creativity.
Inviting us to dream bigger and better, Chanel’s 2024/25 Métiers d’art collection platforms exquisite craftsmanship. As each thoughtfully curated look layers narratives from different periods and places, the show channels the spirit of adventure with a distinctly French savoir-faire.
