In one of their earliest public photos together, then-friends Garth and Trisha shared a hug on the red carpet of the 25th annual American Music Awards.
The duo met in Nashville in 1987 during a demo recording session before either one found fame. Garth promised Trisha if he got a record deal, he’d help her get one too as well as open for him in concerts.
Garth was signed by Capitol Records Nashville and released his debut album in April 1989. His sophomore follow up, No Fences, dropped in August 1990 and made the singer a bonafide superstar, with such country classics as “Friends in Low Places and “The Thunder Rolls.”
Trisha provided backup vocals on No Fences. She released her eponymous debut album in 1991, going on to perform as the opening act on Garth’s U.S. tour the same year.
