Viewers have demanded answers from Ofcom after Adil Ray made "fat-shaming" comments on ITV.
The presenter, 50, had been hosting Good Morning Britain on Thursday (January 2), together with co-hosts Kate Garraway and Sean Fletcher, when he made comments surrounding darts champion Luke Littler. In the conversation, Adil admitted that he was "worried" for Luke, 17.
Adil, Kate and Sean were discussing the star's health, with the Lingo host admitting that he knew his comments "might not be very popular", before saying that he was concerned for Luke's health, claiming that he is already earning "the look of a darts player".
After some gasps and grimaces from his co-stars, Adil defended himself, explaining: "He is though; if I were his mum and dad, I mean, he’s sort of – look at him. He’s admitted he has pizzas before a match and sits there playing computer games; I just think I’m a bit worried."
An unnerved Kate, 57, slammed the claims on-air, reminding him that Luke was "so successful" in his career, suggesting that Adil was "fretting" for no reason. She shut Adil down further by joking that he should go to the darts competition with a "carrot" if he was so concerned.
But while Adil was able to see the funny side of the situation, fans watching the show at home were horrified at the comments made by Adil during the show, taking to social media to vent their frustrations. One user was fuming: "Disgusted with Adil Ray fat-shaming a 17-year old on Good Morning Britain this morning!"
Other fans called on the channel to sack Adil Ray overall, with another viewer typing: "Please ditch that Adil Ray! I hope he makes a public apology to Luke Littler after making derogatory comments about him."
Another user called on broadcasting watchdog Ofcom to get involved with the issue. "Really, fat-shaming live on morning TV; Ofcom should investigate this shocking behaviour," they added - whilst a second wrote: "Wow, Adil Ray body-shaming Luke Littler on live TV, Ofcom needed."
Luke and his family have yet to respond to the claims, despite being the hot topic of the show during the course of the morning. However, Luke has amassed a huge following for his astonishing rise through the ranks of darts, finishing as a runner-up to eventual winner to Luke Humphries.
Since then, Luke has reinvigorated interest in the sport of darts - making appearances on the likes of TV shows such as Bullseye, as well as being nominated for Sports Personality of the Year.
However, Luke - known as "the Nuke" - is now determined to do one better than his previous season and come out of the league as the winner. Luke beat out his Nathan Aspinall 5-2 at Alexandra Palace on Wednesday evening (January 1), securing him a spot in the semi-final on Thursday evening (January 2) against Stephen Bunting.
