Hiroyuki Sanada won best lead actor in a drama series at the 2025 Golden Globes for his role in Shogun as the Japanese actor followed his historic win in the same category at the 2024 Emmys.
“Thank you Golden Globes for recognizing me. I’m so happy to be here with these great nominees. Thank you FX, Disney+ and all the cast members and crew of Shogun for sharing this amazing journey. I’d love to say thank you for everyone who has been in my life. All of you have brought me here. And I’d like to say to the young actors and creators in the world: Please be yourself. Believe in yourself and never give up. Good luck,” Sanada said when accepting the award on stage Sunday.
He won the Golden Globe trophy for his role as Yoshii Toranaga in Shogun, the FX series that picked up 18 Emmys in September 2024. His award season dominance marks a major moment for Sanada, who is among few top Japanese actors to cross over to Hollywood in a major way.
Sanada and Shōgun creatives like co-creators, executive producers and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo are already on board for two more seasons of the FX series. The network spent years developing the series, which is based on Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name.
It’s the second stab at Shōgun, following NBC’s Richard Chamberlain miniseries in 1980. The 2025 Golden Globes took place on Jan. 5 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
Golden Globes producer Dick Clark Productions is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns The Hollywood Reporter.
