What's New
Greenland's elected leader has said the island is not for sale after Donald Trump said that owning and controlling the territory was an "absolute necessity" for the United States.
"Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom," the island's Prime Minister Múte Egede said in a written comment, according to Reuters.
It came a day after Trump wrote on Truth Social: "For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity."
Why It Matters
Since winning the presidential election, Trump has signaled a strong "America First" approach to trade and foreign policy, pushing for rebalanced deals on U.S. foreign financial commitments.
Most recently, this has included threatening to demand the return of the Panama Canal from the Central American country if it fails to reduce the fees and tariffs it imposes on American ships.
This is also not the first time that Trump has floated the idea of purchasing Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of Denmark and host to a large U.S. Air Force base.
Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismissed Trump's first proposal of the idea in 2019 as "absurd." Trump later canceled a state visit to Denmark.
This is a breaking story. More to follow.
