Dad-of-five Hugh Grant has labelled online trolls as "misogynists" after targeting his wife online.

The actor, 64, who became a household name following his role on Four Weddings and a Funeral in 1994, took to social media to express his upset over the treatment his wife has received. The star, who married Anna Elisabet Eberstein in 2018, explained his discontent on X, formerly known as Twitter. He wrote: "Sometimes when I go to events my wife comes with me. If the @MailOnline get hold of pictures they put it on their website and hundreds of comments tear my wife to pieces. "

He added: "She’s never thrust herself forward or courted attention in any way. I don’t know if the comments are real or written by the mail. Or by bots. But I do know it’s cyber bullying. And misogynist. And I think it may be in some way the business model of the @MailOnline Monetising unkindness."

On the back of his post, a flurry of comments came through. One person said: "Thanks for highlighting the unfair nature of this business. You and your wife are more than entitled to enjoy events and she certainly does not deserve any negativity for just being present. You have been an effective voice, a brave person and it's great to see someone calling. Sadly that is what they thrive on."

Another posted: "It is all that and the desperation to make a story about 10 days longer than it needs to especially if they can use it as an attack piece - usually not very credible nor newsworthy." Meanwhile a third person in support of the star added: "I understand it’s completely irrelevant but your wife is beautiful. Very beautiful. Sour, empty people often tear into others, women in particular. They will always have a hole so big, no amount of hatred will fill it. Meanwhile your wife continues to be beautiful and loved."

Last month, Hugh announced that Bridget Jones will return despite his character being killed off in the last instalment. The actor revealed that he agreed to take part in the forth instalment of the franchise after re-writing his part. Hugh didn't feature in the last film of the franchise which was Bridget Jones’s Baby. And in that film, his absence from the film was down to him being killed off.

Although he "loved the script" he said he realised there was an issue. He previously said: "But really there’s no part for Daniel Cleaver in it at all. They wanted him in it, and in the end, they’d done something I wasn’t crazy about. It’s absolutely the best (book) and I think it’s very funny and very, very moving. I’m not in a lot, I did a week’s work, that’s it … But when you see the film, you’ll be very moved."
