I'm A Celebrity star Victoria Derbyshire has shared that she suffered a miscarriage while she was on a plane but carried on working.

The broadcaster said she had the miscarriage while she was on a plane many years ago, before she became mum to her sons Oliver, 20, and Joe, 17, with husband Mark Sandell. She said that her response at the time was “practical and pragmatic” and that she continued to work, adding that it was “absolutely bizarre”.

Speaking on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast, Victoria said that having her first pregnancy end in miscarriage had been “very upsetting” and that although she is a “talker” by nature, it was five years until she could bring herself to talk about what had happened.

The Newsnight presenter – who was a jungle camper on the ITV show in 2020 – said: "I actually had the miscarriage on a plane. I was just so sort of practical and pragmatic.

“I was like, ‘Well this is happening now and I’m going to work,’ and I just sort of carried on. It’s absolutely bizarre.”

Victoria told the podcast’s host Giovanna Fletcher that the experience was “very upsetting”, adding: “I’m a talker, I talk about everything. I’m really open. Maybe it’s partly because of the way I was brought up. We talked to my mum about all the c*** that was going on.

“That was one thing I couldn’t talk about for about five years; it was so odd… I could not speak about it.”

The TV star revealed her sons both know that she had a miscarriage and wonder what life would have been like if they’d had another sibling. She said: “They fondly think, ‘Oh what if that had been a sister, what if, you know, what would we have called her'."

“I know what we would have called her,” she added. “They would have liked a sister," she said of Oliver and Joe.

Victoria met her now husband Mark, who is a radio and TV producer, at Radio 5 Live and they were together for many years before going on to tie the knot. They wed in 2018, celebrating their nuptials in the grounds of their home.
