Reading is a hugely relaxing and rewarding pastime (Image: Getty)

When the weather is cold, dark and miserable outside, there's really nothing better than staying at home and spending the evening relaxing instead of going out.

And one hobby that seems to be perfect for those winter evenings is reading a good book.

For those of us who love reading, this is probably something that we do regularly anyway.

But if you're not really into it, it can be difficult to know where to get started, as there are seemingly endless titles out there that you can choose from.

However, one reading aficionado on TikTok who has read nearly 150 books this year has shared her top picks that you should read 'immediately'.

Lacey, who posts on TikTok as LLD Library, has read an impressive 149 books in 2024 alone. She uses her account to share reviews, recommendations and book club ideas, and has racked up more than 16k followers.

Earlier this year, she shared some of her favourite five-star reads from the year so far, saying: "I will tell everyone to read books forever."

Here are her six recommendations that you should add to your list today.

The Teacher - Freida McFadden

Desrcribed as a "chilling story of twisted secrets and long-awaited revenge", this book is centered around teacher Eve and student Addie navigating a scandal at their school.

Lacey said the book was 'mind blowing' with a couple of crazy twists, and you 'won't be able to put it down'. She continued: "There's no stopping you from finishing this book in one sitting, or staying up way past your bedtime to finish this book."

It might be slightly difficult to get into at first, but once you start to piece everything together, you'll not be able to stop thinking about it.

The Idea of You - Robinne Lee

If you're a fan of romance or spice, then this is the book for you. Lacey says she was 'absolutely infatuated' by the male main character, raving about how the 'banter and overall sexiness of the book was just incredible.'

It's about the relationship between world-famous boyband member Hayes Campbell and Solène Marchand, an older woman with a child - and the chemistry and attraction that develops between them.

Earlier this year it was also turned into a film starring Anne Hathaway - so if you watched it and enjoyed, then it's worth reading the book too.

When She Returned - Lucinda Berry

Fans of a horror/thriller will want to add this book to their lists, according to Lacey. She said: "This is a very very scary yet interesting look into the life of someone who gets sucked into a cult.

"This book had my heart pounding at the end."

It follows the reappearance of a woman that went missing 11 years ago, which throws her family into turmoil, exposing dark secrets and the hidden, often devastating truth of family relationships.

Look Closer - David Ellis

If you're a fan of the hugely popular book The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, you'll want to read this one, as Lacey described it as 'The Silent Patient on steroids.'

She said: "This book had be absolutely fooled. It is a little bit long, but it won't feel lke that, you won't be able to put it down."

Described as a 'wickedly clever and fast-paced novel of greed, revenge, obsession,' it follows the secrets that unfold after seemingly normal couple Simon and Vicky are thrown into the midst of a murder.

Lacey added: "Good luck going to bed after this."

The Frozen River - Ariel Lawhon

An incredible depiction of a real-life person in the late 1700s in America, this book follows Martha Ballard and her challenging life as a midwife.

Lacey said: "This book does have that historical fiction element but also does have some true components to it.

"And it has a little bit of a murder mystery. The romance between our main character and her husband is just so much fun."

The Woman - Kristin Hannah

This is another historical fiction with a very strong female lead, so perfect if you're wanting to feel empowered.

Lacey said: "This book is wartime, gory, it has moments where it's very difficult to read some of the things in this book. But it gives you a glimpse into what life was like for the women of Vietnam, and also the men of Vietnam, the veterans in general.

"This book is, I think, my number one book of 2024 so far."
