Inside Will Smith and Jada Pinkett’s marriage arrangement after turbulent years

3 hours ago 1

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have been together for 30 years, but have been open about how their marriage is not exactly conventional.

The pair started dating in 1995, after the Men In Black star’s marriage to his first wife, Sheree Zampino, ended.

Two years after meeting they married in 1997. They then welcomed children Jaden in 1998 and Willow in 2000, and Jada became step-parent to Will’s son Trey.

The release of the Scream 2 actress’ memoir, Worthy made headlines in 2023 as Jada revealed she and Will, 56, were secretly separated for six years.

She also added that they reconciled after he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars in March 2022.

The 53-year-old confirmed that they had gone their separate ways in 2016, but insisted that they still had no plans to divorce.

In November 2024 the pair were seen looking cosy on a date night, and a recent People article confirmed that they are still together despite living apart.

‘Call it what you want. They are living their own lives but haven’t completely severed ties,’ a source told People.

Another added that they ‘are still together,’ but as far as cohabiting, they ‘have had separate homes for years.’

So what have the pair said about their unique arrangement?

In a 2021 interview with GQ, Will revealed that they don’t practice monogamy.

‘Jada never believed in conventional marriage.… Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship. So she grew up in a way that was very different than how I grew up.

He added: ‘And for the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection.’

‘We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way. And marriage for us can’t be a prison. And I don’t suggest our road for anybody. I don’t suggest this road for anybody. But the experiences that the freedoms that we’ve given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love.’

Similarly, Jada told the Huffpost: ‘I’ve always told Will, “You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be okay. Because at the end of the day, Will is his own man. I’m here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that’s not for me to do for him. Or vice versa.’

The pair separated in 2015 and while apart, Jada had a relationship with a rapper named August Alsina.

In a Red Table Talk interview, Jada famously called the relationship an ‘entanglement’ and was unclear about the details of the relationship.

In an interview with Angela Yee in 2020, after the pair had split, August said of his time with Jada: ‘I totally gave myself to that relationship for years of my life, and I truly and really, really deeply love and have a ton of love for her.’

‘I devoted myself to it, I gave my full self to it — so much so to the point that I can die right now and be okay with knowing that I truly gave myself to somebody.’

After reconciling after Will defended Jada at the Oscars by slapping Chris Rock, the pair have reconciled and spoken about how they will never divorce.

Jada told Extra at the time: ‘That was a moment that I knew I would never leave Will’s side after all those years thinking I would.’

During the promotion of her memoir, Worthy, in 2023 Jada told Today: ‘I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce.’ She added: ‘We will work through whatever, and I just haven’t been able to break that promise.’

Will told The Baltimore Banner in 2023: ‘Jada is the best friend I have ever had on this planet, and I am going to show up for her and support her for the rest of my life.’
