Carter died at home in Plains, Georgia, on December 29 at age 100. He served one term as the 39th president before his defeat by Ronald Reagan in the 1980 election. Carter was the longest-living president in U.S. history, and his marriage to Rosalynn Carter lasted 77 years, the longest marriage in presidential history.

What Is Jimmy Carter's Funeral Schedule?

To honor Carter's life, there will be two public observances on Thursday. One will be held in Atlanta and the other will be in Washington, D.C., according to the Carter Center. In the nation's capital, Carter's funeral will take place at the Washington National Cathedral.

Beginning Tuesday, Carter has been lying in the Capitol Rotunda, where the public can visit to pay respects. On Thursday, he will be taken to Washington National Cathedral for funeral services starting at 10 a.m.

Following the funeral, Carter will be returned to Georgia, where a private funeral service will be held.

What Is a National Day of Mourning?

A national day of mourning is declared by the federal government to honor lives lost.

For instance, there's a national day of mourning on Thanksgiving to remember the Native Americans who suffered and died during the settlement of the U.S.

A 1954 proclamation signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower decreed that flags must fly at half-staff for 30 days after the death of a current or former president. Accordingly, flags will fly at half-staff until January 28 in Carter's honor.

On the day Carter died, President Biden said: "I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter Jr."

Chip Carter, the former president's son, said in a statement released by The Carter Center: "My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs."

President-elect Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social: "The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude. Melania and I are thinking warmly of the Carter Family and their loved ones during this difficult time. We urge everyone to keep them in their hearts and prayers."
