ITV's new series Until I Kill You hit our screens on Sunday, with Bafta-winning Anna Maxwell Martin taking centre stage as Delia Balmer.
The action unfolds in the 1990s, and dramatises Delia Balmer's memoir about her harrowing relationship with one of Britain's most infamous murderers, John Sweeney.
Viewers immediately shared their delight as 'Vigil' actor Shaun Evans delivered a chilling depiction of Sweeney. The Liverpudlian star transformed into an increasingly terrifying monster who was unrecognisable from the refined character of Morse that he usually plays in ITV's 'Endeavour'.
The true story follows retired nurse Balmer, now in her 70s, as she remembers her harrowing relationship with Sweeney, whom she met in a local pub.
Although Sweeney initially seems charming, he quickly reveals his true colours as his dark past comes to light and the couple's relationship deteriorates.
After moving into Delia's home, Sweeney launches a campaign of physical and mental abuse, even holding Delia hostage for four days by tying her to the bed and making foul threats.
Sharing their horror and delight at Evan's impressive acting, one viewer wrote: "Oh, is Shaun Evans our creepy guy here? And in his original Scouse accent? Bring it. #UntilIKillYou."
Another added: "Shaun Evans? That'll do for me. #UntilIKillYou", while a third chimed in: "You had me at Shaun Evans #UntilIKillYou", while a third said: "#ShaunEvans is always brilliant. He never disappoints. Not sure I want to see him as the bad guy #UntilIKillYou".
Until I Kill You is available to stream on ITVX.
