Emilio Echevarria, who starred in the James Bond film Die Another Day, has died at the age of 80. He died on Saturday (January 4) and his death was announced by The Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences yesterday.

Echevarria began his acting career nearly half a century ago in 1987. He starred in several blockbuster films and earned three Ariel Award nominations—the Mexican equivalent of the Oscars.

His breakthrough came in the 1980s when he played roles in Intimidad, Bathroom Intimacy, and Los Pasos de Ana.

In 2002, he portrayed Raoul in Die Another Day, an ally to James Bond who was then played by Pierce Brosnan. The film also starred big names such as Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike.

Echevarria continued to make his mark in Hollywood, starring in the 2004 film The Alamo by John Lee Hancock and playing a role in the Brad Pitt movie Babel in 2006. The thriller boasted an ensemble cast including Cate Blanchett, Peter Wright, Elle Fanning and Gael Garcia Bernal.

The late actor received Ariel Award nominations for his performances in Dying In The Gulf (1990), A Monster With A Thousand Heads (2015) and The Chosen (2018).

The actor's legacy lives on through his daughter Lourdes Echevarria, who has followed in her father's footsteps and made a name for herself in the Mexican film industry.

Tributes have been pouring in from Emilio's fans. One took to social media with a quote from one of his most-loved films, Amores Perros (2000).

The fan wrote: "'I wanted to compose the world and then share it with you... You must have noticed that I failed,' a devastating line from the film. One of the best films in Mexican cinema and one of the best characters too.

"RIP Emilio Echeverría, the 'Goat' from Amores Perros."
