An actor who appeared in James Bond movie Die Another Day has died at the age of 80.

Mexican star Emilio Echevarría died in Mexico City on Saturday, January 4. His death was announced by The Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences on Monday (January 6).

It comes after a difficult week in showbiz, after filmmaker and Aubrey Plaza's husband Jeff Baena was found dead aged 47. And closer to home in the UK, legendary drag queen The Vivienne died suddenly aged 32.

He began acting almost 50 years ago in 1987, and enjoyed a health career, appearing in a handful of blockbuster movies. Emilio became a national treasure in Mexico, being nominated for three Ariel Awards.

His big break came in the 1980s. He landed roles in Intimidad, Bathroom Intimacy and Los Pasos de Ana.

Then, in 2002, he played Raoul in Die Another Day. Raoul was an ally of James Bond, who was played by Pierce Brosnan at the time.

Other big names in the flick were Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike.

Emilio went on to star in the 2004 movie by John Lee Hancock, The Alamo. Then in 2006 he played Emilio in the Brad Pitt movie Babel.

It also starred the likes of Cate Blanchett, Peter Wright, Elle Fanning and Gael García Bernal, among many others in an ensemble cast. The thriller film followed multiple narratives across Morocco, Japan, Mexico and the US.

Emilio achieved three Ariel Award nominations for 1990's Dying In The Gulf, 2015's A Monster With A Thousand Heads and 2018's The Chosen.

The actor is survived by his daughter Lourdes Echevarría. She is also an actor, who has appeared in a handful of Mexican movies.
