Jay-Z's legal team has submitted a new filing claiming Tony Buzbee never met with the woman prior to her filing a lawsuit against the artist for rape.
On Wednesday, Jay's team accused Buzbee of being an unfit attorney who would rather "gloss" over the "factual inconsistencies" in the woman's lawsuit. They added that Buzbee had never even met with the woman before signing his name on the complaint and before the NBC News interview back in December.
"Initially, he deflected, saying Plaintiff's 'case was referred to [his] firm by another, who vetted it prior to sending it' to him, and that his firm would 'continue to vet her claims and collect corroborating data," read the new filing, which Complex has reviewed. "Now, he concedes that he did not even meet with Plaintiff before signing his name to the complaint, and fails to identify any evidence that corroborates anything his client alleged."
Hov's legal team added, "Mr. Carter seeks only to hold Mr. Buzbee to the ethical standards that constrain any responsible attorney who would solemnly sign his name to allegations in court."
In a statement to TMZ on Wednesday, Buzbee called the lawsuit "weak and desperate." He also claimed that he and four other lawyers did, in fact, interview the accuser.
The new filing comes after Jay-Z called for sanctions against Buzbee and his alleged shady business practices. Jay's legal team, led by his lawyer Alex Spiro, argued that Buzbee failed to properly investigate the woman's claims to assess their validity.
The legal team stated that the suit, in which Jay-Z and Diddy were accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in 2000, should be dismissed. Jay has denied the allegations, calling Buzbee a "fraud" and an "ambulance chaser in a cheap suit."
Jay's lawyer has since laid out several inconsistencies with the accuser’s story and made sure to distance his client from Diddy. “Mr. Carter has nothing to do with Mr. Combs’ case or Mr. Combs," Jay-Z's lawyer Alex Spiro said back in December during a press conference responding to the rape allegations.
