Jean Smart won the trophy for best performance by an actress in a comedy series at the 2025 Golden Globes.

“I never thought I’d be so happy to be called a hack,” the star of Hacks said while accepting the award on Sunday night. Adding of Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky, “But no, I mean, I have the most brilliant showrunners.

“I have a cast and crew that were sent from heaven, especially my co-star, Hannah Einbinder. Without Ava, there would be no Deborah,” she continued. “Also our brilliant cast, the rest of our cast and crew and everybody at Max and Universal for unbelievable support over the years. We’re in the middle of season four and we’re still having a ball. So, thank you all so much for supporting the show and loving the show.”

Smart spoke to The Hollywood Reporter in June 2024 about her initial thoughts about taking on the role of Deborah Vance in Hacks. “When I read the script, I said, ‘This is everything I could possibly want for my next job.’ But I needed to be sure that real stand-ups could believe I was a comic. I had never been a comedian, so they were the real litmus test. And I passed, I think!”

Smart went on to explain how the role of the legendary stand-up comedian has changed her: “I make more money. (Laughs) Finally, after all these years, I’m doing it for the money! In all seriousness, I couldn’t ask to be working with nicer, more supportive and collaborative people. And Hannah [Einbinder] … there aren’t enough wonderful words to say about her. She’s extraordinary.”

The actress beat out Kristen Bell (Nobody Wants This), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building), Kathryn Hahn (Agatha All Along) and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) — who won in this category last year. Smart has also won three Emmys for her work in Hacks.

The show’s third season premiered on Max in May 2024. Hacks season four is set to release later this year.
