Kate Garraway admitted she was left “hating herself” due to her intense vape addiction that was reignited years after she originally quit.

The 57-year-old Good Morning Britain host initially replaced smoking with e-cigarettes in 2009 after the birth of her son Billy, and in 2019, she quit vaping for good ahead of her stint in the Australian jungle for I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! The mother-of-two confessed she became “instantly addicted” to vaping when the topic was covered on an edition of the ITV daytime show last year.

During an interview with Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley on GMB on Thursday, Kate revealed the exact moment her vaping addiction was reignited as she held an e-cigarette live on-air. “The last thing I want to do is any way in sanction [vaping], because I don’t now. But my experience was, after Billy was born, I did smoke before and I was craving going back to smoking [but] didn’t want to,” Kate began.

Kate said it was a segment on GMB that reignited her vaping addiction

She recalled her experience with vaping, and said she started because a friend had recommended it to her. “I thought it was amazing, because it didn’t smell, at that point you could do it anywhere, it must have been like smoking in the 70s, you didn’t have to stand outside. Everybody said it was better for you, and I did feel much better. I got the nicotine hit,” Kate explained.

She successfully gave it up “completely” before her stint in the jungle, but during an edition of GMB last year, her addiction to vaping sparked up again. “I think we had some props in here or something ridiculous, and I picked it up and I was instantly addicted, like beyond anything! I couldn’t believe it and it made me realise how, particularly those disposable ones, are so addictive,” Kate shared.

She said it was a warning from her late husband Derek Draper, who died in January this year, that prompted her to give up vaping again - but this time, for the sake of her children, Darcey and Billy. “I can remember Derek funnily enough saying, when I said, ‘Oh I think this is good,’ because he hated smoking in all forms, he said, ‘It took 200 years to discover tobacco was bad for you, these are going to be bad for you,’” she recalled.

“They’re so easy to do, and they deliver such a hit, so I don’t know that it’s a solution to ban the disposable ones, but they’re everywhere. This is not a sanction. I hated myself for it,” the presenter sadly admitted. Her comments come after it was announced the government would ban single use vapes by summer 2025, after the use of vapes in the UK grew by 400% from 2012 to 2023.
