Kate Middleton deliberately avoids Diana's style rule as she refuses to wear one colour

2 weeks ago 4

Kate Middleton often honours her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, through her choice of jewellery. However, she has chosen not to adhere to the late Princess of Wales' rebellion of wearing black whenever she pleased despite royal protocol stating otherwise.

Diana, who tragically passed away at the age of 36, was known for her unique fashion sense that often defied traditional etiquette. As members of the Royal Family, Kate and Prince William are subject to public scrutiny and must follow long-standing protocols.

At official engagements, royal women are expected to wear modest, knee-length or longer outfits, with tights rather than bare legs. Hats are a must at all royal weddings, along with subtle accessories, including nail polish, the Express reports.

Diana regularly broke royal fashion etiquette

The late Queen Elizabeth II always wore nude nail polish, a tradition Kate has continued, reportedly being told she can never wear red.

Despite being in the royal spotlight for over two decades, Kate has been seen wearing black on only a few occasions.

Last year, Kate Middleton graced Remembrance Sunday in a gorgeous Catherine Walker ensemble paired with a Philip Treacy hat. The previous year, she honoured the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on September 19, 2022, donning a sombre black Alexander McQueen coat dress, complemented by a saucer-shaped hat and veil.

In contrast, Princess Diana famously flouted royal protocol in 1981 by wearing black shortly after her engagement to King Charles. Her choice of an off-the-shoulder taffeta ballgown for her first public event as the future King's fiancée turned heads and drew a sharp reaction from Charles himself.

The stunning gown, crafted by David Emanuel who later designed her iconic wedding dress, was a statement piece that sparked controversy.

Wearing black is frowned upon in the Royal Family unless in mourning

Diana later recounted in an interview for her biography that Charles had been visibly upset by her attire, reportedly saying, "Only people in mourning wear black! "

Despite any pushback, Diana continued to wear black for various occasions, both formal and casual.

She even chose a Chanel sailor-style dress for a visit to the hospital where Charles was recovering from surgery, all while juggling her role as a mother to young William and Harry.
