Taylor Swift has millions of fans around the world and her influence transcends species... literally. That's the case of Serena, a rescued turkey that's creating awareness about the cruelty that her species face and the millions of birds that get slaughtered around Thanksgiving.
Serena, a resident Swiftie at Farm Sanctuary in Acton, California, was born on a small farm where she was subjected to animal cruelty, such as painful and traumatic debeaking.
"If things went as planned, Serena would've become a holiday meal. Instead, she was rescued just in time and got a second chance." wrote Farm Sanctuary.
The organization added that because one person saw Serena as someone -not something- "she's learned what it's like to be loved and cared for in a way most turkeys will never know."
Farm Sanctuary's care team discovered Serena loves music, especially Taylor Swift. "Her favorite song is "All Too Well," and she lights up as soon as she hears the tune."
According to the organization, 46 million turkeys are slaughtered each Thanksgiving. "You can choose a kinder tradition. We invite you to celebrate compassion by symbolically adopting a rescued turkey!"
Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 to combat the abuses of factory farming, advocate for institutional reforms, and encourage a new awareness and understanding of farm animals and the benefits of plant-based living.
