Kim Kardashian On Menendez Brothers' Resentencing Push: 'Second Chance'

2 months ago 7

Kim Kardashian is celebrating the Los Angeles County District Attorney's recommendation that Erik and Lyle Menendez be resentenced for the 1989 murder of their parents.

Kardashian, 44, recently visited the brothers in prison to discuss prison reform, which she has been passionate about for the last several years.

Earlier this month, she also penned an essay for NBC News calling for their release.

"The Menendez brothers were granted a second chance at life and will wake up tomorrow finally eligible for a parole hearing. They could be released in as early as 6 months," Kardashian wrote in an Instagram Story on Thursday.

"Thank you, George Gascón, for revisiting the Menendez brothers' case and righting a significant wrong. Your commitment to truth and fairness is commendable."

"To the brothers' family, friends, and the millions who have been vocal supporters - your voices were heard," the billionaire Skims founder continued.

"The media's focus, especially on the heels of Ryan Murphy's TV show, helped expose the abuse and injustices in their case," she noted of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Kardashian has also worked with Murphy on America Horror Story: Delicate and his upcoming Hulu legal drama All's Fair.

"Society's understanding of child abuse has evolved, and social media empowers us to question the systems in place," she continued. "This case highlights the importance of challenging decisions and seeking truth, even when guilt is not in question."

Kardashian concluded, "I believe in the justice system's ability to evolve, and I am grateful for a society where we can challenge decisions and seek justice. Never stop questioning."

Lyle Menendez, at the time 21, and Erik Menendez, 18, admitted to fatally shooting their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, but claimed they acted out of fear their father, who had sexually abused Erik for years, was about to kill them to keep the abuse a secret.

The brothers shot Jose five times, including once at point-blank range with a shotgun aimed at the back of his head. As Kitty attempted to crawl away, Lyle reloaded and shot her in the face with a shotgun. A total of 14 shots were fired.

Multiple family members, including Kitty's sister and the brothers' 92-year-old aunt Joan Andersen VanderMolen, have publicly supported their release.

Other celebrities, including Rosie O'Donnell, Sunny Hostin, and convicted murderer Gypsy Rose Blanchard have all voiced their support for a potential restart for the brothers.

Shortly after the DA's announcement Thursday, O'Donnell posted a captionless Instagram photo of the infamous duo from a news article on the decision.
