King Charles and Queen Camilla eased into the Australian way of life rather nicely on Tuesday afternoon as they took up the tongs and turned some snags on the barbecue.

The pair were enjoying a community picnic lunch at Parramatta Park hosted by NSW Premier Chris Minns with about 500 community leaders, inspiring Australians and volunteers.

Making the scene all the more Australian, behind the royal couple stood some Bondi Surf Rescue lifesavers.

Other activities guests could enjoy included henna tattooing, backyard cricket and a Royal Agricultural Society sheepdog display.

Also in attendance at the gathering was hero NSW Police Inspector Amy Scott who shot and killed mass murderer Joel Cauchi amid his stabbing rampage at Westfield Bondi Junction in April.

Scott was one of the many “inspiring Australians” who was introduced to the King and Queen during the barbeque.

King and Queen’s Tuesday itinerary

The King will later visit the Melanoma Institute Australian at Wollstonecraft on Sydney’s lower north shore, where he will meet joint Australians of the Year Georgina Long and Richard Scolyer.

Thousands are also expected to gather at the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House at 4.20pm on Tuesday to farewell the couple before they embark on a Navy fleet review on the final stage of their tour.

They will then head to this week’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa where Charles will preside over the gathering in his role as head of the Commonwealth, the first time he has attended in that role.

The visit is the first trip to Australia by a reigning British monarch since 2011, while King Charles has previously visited 16 times in an official capacity.

The King, 75, was earlier in 2024 diagnosed with a form of cancer, the type of which has not been officially confirmed.
