Alan Rachins' devastated widow has confirmed the American actor has passed away this Saturday.

The beloved actor rose to fame on the small screen across the Atlantic, where he was once known for his role in the hit series LA Law and Dharma & Greg. For eight years, Alan Rachins portrayed lawyer Douglas Brackman Jr. in the former show, but he was also known by fans of the latter as Jenna Ellman's hippie father.

But this Saturday, November 2, his wife Joanna Frank, whom he married in 1978, announced that he had passed away. According to his widow, the US TV star passed away of heart failure while sleeping at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.

Joanna Frank, who has also worked as an actress, confirmed Alan's death to The Hollywood Reporter. The pair tied the knot after meeting in an acting class for the first time. They later welcomed a son named Robert and often faced one another in the same projects.

During his lengthy stint on LA Law, which ran from September 1996 to May, 1994, Joanna portrayed regular character Sheila Brackman, Douglas' wife. The pair have also played a couple in the Henry Jaglom film Always, released in 1985.

Joanna was also linked to her beau Alan earning a role on Century Fox's LA Law as her younger brother, producer Steven Bohco, kept Alan in mind for the part of Douglas Brackman Jr. This led Alan to star in almost all of the show's episodes, which earned him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations in 1988.

Alan and Joanna also launched Allofit Productions with the goal of adapting books and screenplays into TV projects. But while Alan and Joanna appeared to share everything, they carefully kept their off-screen life away from prying eyes.

Three years after leaving the set of LA Law for the last time, Alan bagged a role on the ABC sitcom Dharma & Greg, which ran for five seasons until 2002. There, viewers found him portraying Jenna's father Larry. The actor's resume also includes appearances in The Golden Girls, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Stargate SG-1, among others. Alan also has several film credits to his name, appearing in the likes of Thunder Run, North and Showgirls.
