Letterboxd user shares horror movie challenge and says everyone should watch list of terrifying movies once

1 month ago 5

A Letterboxd user's challenge has been shared, and one thing is for sure – it is intended only for the most hardcore of film fans.

There are so many challenges out there that can tickle the fancy of a movie buff, whether it be watching the top 250 narrative features on Letterboxd, watching the entirety of the Lord of the Rings extended trilogy in one sitting, or simply sitting through the two hour and 18-minute run time of Megalopolis.

One particularly dedicated subsection of film fan, however, has always been horror fans.

Say what you want about the genre, but few sections of culture are as vociferous and dedicated as the horror film fandom.

The challenge in question though is one that may even test their limits.

The list, posted by a user to the film reviewing platform, is titled: “Horror Movies Everyone Should Watch at Least Once”.

The caption states: “Can you complete the 300 movie challenge? #Horror300”.

This has gone as close to viral as something on Letterboxd can, with almost 500 comments and over 58,000 likes at the time of writing.

On the list is a combination of classics of the genre, more niche entries, and some more contemporary horrors that are absolute bangers.

In films such as Barbarian, Raw, Terrifier 2, Ichi the Killer, and Saw, it has some utterly unsettling and even disgusting horrors.

It also can’t be accused of ignoring the foundational classics of the genre, with movies such as Nosferatu, Psycho, and Dracula.

As a big horror fan myself, it was reassuring too to see some of my personal favourites, such as Green Room, Us, It Follows, and Silence of the Lambs.

In the comments, horror fans flooded to share their opinions, with one urging fans to remember to use the hashtag #Horror300 to track their progress.

As someone who has seen between half and two thirds of the list, finishing out the 300 still feels like a massive undertaking.

One fan commented: “100/300 still a way long to go”.

Another said: “This is beautifully curated.”

A third commented: “I really like the colours here with how it's sorted..... sooooo pretty my god.”

The list is a cascade of colours, with each film’s poster organised alongside others of a similar hue.

It’s worth scrolling through for this pleasing visual alone.

You can never make everyone happy though, with a few pointing to specific films and questioning their inclusion or exclusion.

One frequently pointed out exclusion was Jennifer’s Body, whilst one other fan commented: “Salò isn't really horror but also it very much is.”

All I'm saying is, if Salò isn’t a horror, call me a fake horror fan.
