New details have shed light on Liam Payne's final fears

Devastating new details about Liam Payne's final hours have emerged, with an item found on a hotel balcony pointing towards his desperation to escape.

The One Direction star died on October 16, following a fall from the third-floor balcony of the CasaSur Palmero hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It has since emerged that he had allegedly been attempting to flee his suite, having had a terrible fear of being locked up in hotel rooms, and had apparently warned worried staff that he would try to do so.

And an upsetting finding on a second-floor balcony has shed some light on the dad-of-one's mindset before falling.

In the aftermath of Liam's death, a guest who'd been staying on the second floor of the CasaSur Palmero reportedly discovered a leather bag on their balcony, which contained pills, a bottle of Jack Daniel's, and a note labelled "for Liam". Investigators believe this bag, which was identified as Liam's, had been lowered to the second-floor balcony as part of his escape attempt.

In 2021, three years before his untimely death, Liam spoke about his terror of being "locked" up in "lonely hotel rooms". During an interview with host Steven Bartlett on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Liam shared: "My dad said it from day one - lonely hotel rooms, man - getting locked in that room is not fun when you've been exposed."

The beloved popstar then spoke about some of the "rock bottom" moments he'd experienced over the years, saying: "Rock bottom? I was worried how far my rock bottom was going to be. Where's rock bottom for me? I'm very good at hiding it, you wouldn't even know. I don't even know if I've hit it yet."

On the day he died, Liam was captured on surveillance camera visibly intoxicated and causing a disturbance in the lobby before hotel staff intervened. Witnesses reported that the singer resisted, informing staff he did not want to stay in the room and telling them that he would use the balcony to escape if confined.

Employees reportedly used a master key to place Liam in his room, with one staff member contacting emergency services mere minutes later. They explained that the 1D star was in a room with a balcony and expressed concerns that he might try to flee. As per the transcript, the employee stated: "I don't know whether his life may be in danger. He is in a room with a balcony, and, well, we're a little afraid."

After Liam was left alone in his room, he apparently attempted to escape via the balcony, with devastating consequences. Liam's body was found with a bag still strapped over his shoulder - suggesting he may have been preparing to leave his suite. This bag was not present when the singer was carried from the lobby to his room.

A post-mortem examination determined that Liam, whose body was discovered in the hotel's internal courtyard, died from multiple injuries as well as internal and external bleeding. Officers have ruled out suicide and believe Liam had likely been in a state of "semi or total unconsciousness".

According to the public prosecutor's office, substances were discovered in Liam's hotel room after his death, alongside damaged objects and furniture. On November 8, it was announced that three people had been charged in connection with the tragedy.
