Singer Liam Payne's body may not be returned to his grieving family for a couple of weeks at least before he can have a funeral in the UK, according to claims in Argentina.

The 31-year-old One Direction singer fell to his death on Wednesday, when staying at a hotel in Buenos Aires. Liam's dad Geoff is in Argentina and had visited the hotel to read the tributes left by devastated fans. The heartbroken father is wanting to have his son's body repatriated to the UK as soon as possible.

Sources close to the investigation into Liam's death have reportedly told an Argentine newspaper that the tragic star's body could be kept in the country for "between 10 and 15 days" as police wait for test results after an autopsy was performed. With the investigation continuing, it has reported by the Argentine media outlet that sources inside the British Embassy have said: "We are supporting Liam Payne's family and are in contact with local authorities."

Testimony of people who saw Liam in the final hours of his life have said they suspected the singer to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs and Prosecutor Marcelo Roma is awaiting the results of additional toxicological tests after receiving the preliminary results of the autopsy.

The results of histopathological, biochemical, and toxicological studies which have been asked by the prosecutor to be undertaken will take between 10 and 15 days to be confirmed, so Liam's family will not receive his body until these results have returned. It comes after the preliminary results of an autopsy, performed by the Forensic Medical Corps at the Judicial Morgue on Viamonte Street, revealed that Liam died from "multiple traumas" that caused "internal and external bleeding" after his fall earlier this week.

The Public Prosecutor's Office said in a statement: "The head injuries were sufficient to cause death , while the internal and external haemorrhages in the skull, chest, abdomen and limbs contributed to the mechanism of death." The report stated a toxicological and anatomical-pathological study of his blood and urine were being undertaken to determine whether there were any traces of drugs.

Additionally, the musician's medical history might be requested to analyse his mental health history. An investigation is being led by Prosecutor No. 16, headed by Andrés Madrea, with testimonies being taken by Deputy Secretary María Florencia Lavaggi. A full autopsy results will be revealed in due course. It is believed that Liam's funeral will take place in the UK next month, when there is hope that his family will have his body returned home.
