Now, Liam's giving nature has been seen again, after it was revealed that he had donated thousands of pounds to a man hours before his death. Named Jack, the 28-year-old confessed that the One Direction icon had given him the donation to help him overcome a rare form of cancer.
Currently suffering with Stage 4 B Cell Lymphoma, Jack admitted in an interview with the Mirror that he was left destitute due to the cost of the treatment. Due to a lack of funds, he was unsure he would have been able to carry on taking the medicine - until Liam stepped in.
Initially believing the disease to be an injury from work, Jack revealed that his neck and arm "swelled to about twice their normal size", which is when he discovered he had lymphoma. "Going into the doctor with one idea in my head and leaving with a cancer diagnosis was definitely strange, I think I was in shock at first," he explained.
"Ultimately I just accepted it, because in the end there was nothing I could do about it, it was out of my hands," Jack added. Soon, however, the burden of chemotherapy began to take its toll on his health and his finances, resulting in him setting up a GoFundMe to help him continue his treatment.
In total, Jack has raised £26.3k out of the £77.6k goal needed to cover the cost of the chemo. However, he revealed that of the money already raised, £2,300 had been donated by Liam Payne himself - though at first, Jack admitted he believed it to be a joke.
"I thought it was a prank or someone donating under a false name in the interest of preserving their own anonymity, until reports started coming out about Liam’s acts of kindness during his final days," he recalled. "Once we started seeing other reputable sources saying Liam had donated to my GoFundMe, it became sort of surreal. I’m so thankful and I feel extremely lucky."
Liam had been known for his random acts of kindness, helping those in need and giving what he could to good causes. Among those he has helped included foodbanks, with Liam donating a total of £80k to various food poverty campaigns and schemes in the London borough of Camden alone.
Jack's loved ones are on a mission to raise $100,000 for his treatment to overcome Stage 4 B Cell Lymphoma. His GoFundMe page can be found here in order to donate.
