Liam Payne’s partner reportedly issued him a heartbreaking ultimatum before his tragic death.

Days before his death, the former One Direction star and his girlfriend Kate Cassidy had jetted off to Argentina to support his former bandmate Niall Horan on tour.

During their stay, the dad-of-one was forced to apply to renew his visa for America, where he was planning to live with the former waitress.

His visa had expired due to his history of drug use and rehab stint, meaning he had to undergo medical examinations and drug tests before being given the all clear to move back to the states.

However, Liam tragically fell to his death aged 31 on October 16 from the balcony of his third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires. The star died after suffering multiple traumas which led to an “internal and external haemorrhage.”

Now, reports claim that Kate has opened up about her relationship with the tortured singer and apparently made him chose between her or the drugs.

It was believed that Liam had been clean from drugs prior to his drug tests, which he ultimately passed and was about to be granted a visa again.

However, he is said to have fallen off the wagon again by taking narcotics and drinking alcohol shortly before completing his final tests.

Speaking to the New York Post, a source revealed: “His drug use was causing a lot of drama. So she gave him an ultimatum: her or the drugs. He chose the drugs, so she had no choice but to remove herself from the situation. She thought she was doing tough love.”

Kate and Liam had originally planned to stay in the Latin American country for just five days – which later turned into two weeks, something she disagreed with.

She took to social media to explain to fans that she “hated” staying in one place for a long time and needed to return to their home in Florida. The insider went on to claim that Kate has told friends she was a “hostage situation” as their holiday dragged on.

They added: “It was becoming very unhealthy for everyone. She hoped he would follow her back to Miami.” Two days after Liam’s devastating death, Kate took to social media to share a touching tribute to her late boyfriend.

The social media influencer shared the love she had for the musician and admits she’s “at a loss.” Taking to Instagram, she said: “Thank you for all of the kind words and love that has been sent my way.

"I have been at a complete loss. Nothing about the past few days have felt real. I ask and pray that you’ll give me the grace and space to navigate this in private. Liam, my angel. You are everything.

“I want you to know I loved you unconditionally and completely. I will continue to love you for the rest of my life. I love you Liam.” In a statement released one week after Liam's death, Kate revealed that Liam was planning to propose to her before the end of 2024.

She said: "I don't even know where to begin. My heart is shattered in ways I can't put into words. I wish you could see the huge impact you've had on the world, even as it feels so dark right now.

"A few weeks ago, we sat outside on a beautiful evening manifesting our lives together. I keep your note close, even though you told me not to look at it.

"It said, 'Me and Kate to marry within a year/engaged & together forever 444.' Liam, I know we'll be together forever, but not in the way we had planned. You'll always be with me. I've gained a guardian angel."
