Liam Payne's partner, Kate Cassidy, had flown back to LA 48 hours before the ex-One Direction singer's tragic balcony fall that led to his death.
The British pop sensation died on October 16 at just 31 years of age after falling from the third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. Liam, catapulted to stardom as a youth on The X Factor, sustained "serious injuries that were incompatible with life".
The solo artist and father had been vacationing with Cassidy, his girlfriend of two years, when she opted to return home alone after they decided to prolong their trip. Allegations have surfaced that Cassidy confronted Payne with a stark choice before departing.
An alleged acquaintance conveyed to the New York Post: "His drug use was causing a lot of drama. So she gave him an ultimatum: her or the drugs. He chose the drugs, so she had no choice but to remove herself from the situation. She thought she was doing tough love."
Payne, who had reportedly been sober for some time, is believed to have relapsed into drug use and excessive drinking close to the time of his untimely passing. Preliminary findings from the toxicology report indicated the presence of "alcohol, drugs and prescription antidepressants" in his system, reports the Mirror.

In the lead-up to his tragic death, Liam shared joyous videos of his holiday adventures with Kate on Snapchat, and one post was warmly noted as a "Lovely day in Argentina [heart emoji]."
Disaster struck, though, when he was left to take in the charms of South America alone after Kate felt an overwhelming urge to return to Florida, which she succinctly expressed on TikTok: "I need to go home".
Kate conveyed her travel fatigue just two days before the fateful incident, saying on camera: "I was so ready to leave. Love South America, but I hate staying in one place for too long and we were supposed to be there for five days, turned into two weeks and I was just like, 'I need to go home'."

Meanwhile, Liam decided to remain at the hotel.
A friend allegedly confided to the New York Post about Kate's fears regarding Liam potentially spiralling. They revealed: "She can't leave, or else who knows what will happen? And if she leaves, what will he do? But she has other responsibilities, other things that she's supposed to be doing."
Elaborating further, the source illustrated the tense dynamic: "They're in Argentina and it's like a hostage situation. So she tells him she wants to leave, this is after a week. He begs her to stay. She keeps extending her trip, a day, two days. And he just wants her to stay, stay, stay'."
Moreover, they mentioned Kate's simple desire to "wanted to be home in her own bed with her dog".
The allegations about Kate's "ultimatum" emerged after an Argentinian waiter vehemently denied his involvement. Braian Nahuel Paiz, 24, who is accused of being the 'dealer' supplying drugs to Liam, refutes all accusations.
He insists that they were friends and indulged in drug use together.
